Tour Itinerary
We meet in the E.H. Montgomery General Store where a lot of the history will be explained. Those who do not walk can relax and enjoy reminiscing of days gone by. The Montgomery was built around 1840 and is one of the few remaining original stores from the gold mining era. If you plan to take the tour be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Sandals/flops are not recommended.
***Those who prefer to not walk the tour may view the History Presentation at the Montgomery Store. Prior arrangements must be made for the presentation.
*All tours include a copy of the trail guide 'Your Guide to Gold Hill Mines Historic Park and the Gold Hill Rail Trail' Discounts apply to groups.
*Tour #1 .....$5.00/person (Power Point History Presentation may be substituted for those who have limited mobility.)
Approximately 45 mins. Visitors have a chance to see the Gold Hill Jail, Assay Office, Barnhardt and Miller Shafts (go underground only to the entrance), The Chilean Ore Mill and also see the English Dry Stacked Rock Wall constructed around 1845 that is still stands intact and creates two walls of the jail. The Jail contains additional exhibits and photos.
*Tour #2 ......$8.00/person
Includes all the above, plus the Log Barn, Randolph Shaft site and a walk along the Old Mining Road to the Powder House and Gold Hill Pond. (Allow approx. 1 - 1/2 hours).
*Tour #3 .........$10.00/person
includes, in addition to all of the above sites, a walk along the Southeast end of the Gold Hill Rail Trail. The trail follows the original railroad bed as it leaves the Randolph Shaft and Gold Hill Mining Office Site then crosses the road to the Barnhardt Shaft. The trail then meanders through the woods and crosses Old Beatty Ford and Lucy Melcor Roads. It then crosses St. Stephens Church Road and continues into Cabarrus County. Add approximately 2 hours for this tour/hike. The terrain is rougher and more challenging on this part of the trail.
*Gold Panning can be arranged for the group for an additional fee.
*Payment must be made to Vivian Hopkins at the E.H. Montgomery General Store
*Following the tour visitors may utilize the picnic areas in the park for lunch or dine at The Stamp Mill Cafe in the village of Gold Hill.
